The APOSTROPHE is used for TWO THINGS

#1 – To SHOW OWNERSHIP
Mark’s grandfather is the mayor of Chicago.
The dog’s collar was lost.
However, there are a few rules to uses an APOSTROPHE this way.
When there is 1 single owner use ‘ s
The beetle’s spots (one beetle owns spots)
When there is more than one owner use s’
The dogs’ toy (more than one dog owns the toy)
#2 – In a CONTRACTION (to show when letters have been omitted)
Do not = Don’t
Will not = Won’t
Have not = Haven’t
