VERB – It’s what you do.

A Verb is an action word and is the first part of speech you should understand.

It expresses action or states of being.

EXAMPLES

VERB AS AN ACTION

Godzilla gobbled up the tourists.

Jackie flipped the raft.

Waldo and McKenzie made African bracelets.

In the sentences above, the subject is completing an action.

VERB AS A STATE OF BEING

Godzilla is scary!

The students are hungry.

The vase was fragile.

I am an astronaut.

In these sentences, the subjects are not doing anything, they are in a state of being.

VERBS COME IN THREE TYPES

  • Regular
  • Irregular
  • Auxiliary (or helping)

What is a Regular Verb?

A Regular verb is a verb that you can add the suffix -ed to when you want to make it past tense

EXAMPLE

Jump = Jumped

Talk = Talked

Ski = Skied

What is an Irregular Verb?

An Irregular Verb is a verb that you do not add the suffix -ed to when you make it past tense

EXAMPLE

Think = Thought

Take = Took

Bite = Bit

What is an Auxiliary (or helping) Verb?

An Auxiliary Verb is a verb a form BE, DO, and HAVE

Forms of BE = AM, ARE, WAS, WERE, BE, BEEN, BEING

Forms of DO = DO, DOES, DID, DONE, DOING

Forms of HAVE = HAVE, HAS, HAD, HAVING

There are also MODAL AUXILIARY VERBS

CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, SHALL, SHOULD, WILL, WOULD, MUST, OUGHT TO

What are the Principal Parts of a Verb?

There are 3 Principal Parts to EVERY verb.

#1 = Present Form

 #2 = Past Form

#3 = Past Participle Form

Sometimes the Past and Past Participle Form are the same

What are the SIMPLE TENSES?

EXAMPLES

Present = The #1 Principal Part = Fall

Past – The #2 Principal Part = Fell

Future -  “Will” + #1 Principal Part = Will fall

What are the PERFECT TENSES?

EXAMPLES

Present Perfect = “Have” or “Has” + #3 Principal Part = Has fallen

Past Perfect = “Had” + #2 Principal Part = Had fallen

Future Perfect = “Will have” + #3 Principal Part = Will have fallen

What are the PROGRESSIVE TENSES?

EXAMPLES

Present Progressive = “Am” or “Is” or “Are” + ing to verb = Am falling

Past Progressive = “Was” or “Were” + ing to verb = Was falling

Future Progressive = “Will be” + ing to verb = Will be falling

What are the PROGRESSIVE PERFECT TENSES?

EXAMPLES

Present Progressive Perfect = “Have been” or “Has been” + ing to verb = Have been falling

Past Progressive Perfect = “Had been” + ing to verb = Had been falling

Future Progressive Perfect “Will have been” + ing to verb = Will have been falling
