A NOUN names a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA.

What are the FUNCTIONS (CASES) of a NOUN?

A NOUN has 3 functions (or Cases)

Nominative Case

  1. Subject of the Sentence
    1. The hamster escaped.
  2. Appositive
    1. Bob, the smartest kid in class, aced the test.
  3. Subject Complement (when a linking verb is used)
    1. The woman is an astronaut

Objective Case

  1. Direct Object
    1. He bought his wife a dozen roses.
  2. Indirect Object
    1. He bought his wife a dozen roses.
  3. Object of the Preposition
    1. He drove over the bridg

Possessive Case  

  1. Noun that shows ownership
    1. The bike’s tires.
    2. The rabbit’s foot.

What are the different kinds of NOUNS?

There are 7 categories of nouns.

  1. Proper Noun - A Noun that names a specific place, person, thing, or idea
    1. Jerry – Mount Rushmore – Germany – Sony
  2. Common Noun – A Noun that names a general place, person, thing, or idea
    1. boy – mall – country – game – dream – bike
  3. Concrete Noun – A Noun you can touch, smell, see, hear, feel, or taste
    1. eggs – building – sky – hamster – Erie – Statue of Liberty
  4. Abstract Noun – A Noun you cannot touch, smell, see, hear, feel, or taste (The ideas)
    1. imagination – fear – love – hate – childhood – faith
  5. Count Noun – Nouns that change when pluralized
    1. dogs – buildings – trees – frames – cakes – phones
  6. Non-Count Noun (mass nouns) - Nouns that do not change when pluralized
    1. oxygen – furniture – water – sugar – dust – air
  7. Collective Noun - A Noun that represents a group of things, people, places, or ideas
    1. troop – army – council – crowd – public – society – team
