An ADVERB is used to MODIFY a VERB.
Just like an ADJECTIVE is used to make a NOUN more interesting, an ADVERB is used to make a VERB, ADJECTIVE, or another ADVERB more specific and affective.
So, in short, ADVERBS modify VERBS, ADJECTIVES, and ADVERBS.

What are the different types of ADVERBS?
There a 4 different types of ADVERBS
#1 – Modifying – These answer the question HOW? WHEN? WHY? WHERE? HOW MUCH? TO WHAT EXTENT?
EXAMPLE
The balloon floated away. (Answers the WHERE? question)
He crawled slowly. (Answers the HOW? question)
The driver drove too quickly. (Answers the HOW MUCH? question)

#2 – Negation – NEVER, NOT, NOWHERE, SCARELY
EXAMPLE
She never forgot her 1st grade teacher.
The kids scarely received a grade lower than an “A”.
#3 – Affirmation – YES, NO
EXAMPLE
Yes, I’ll go.
No, you won’t.
#4 – Interrogative – WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW
EXAMPLE
Where is my wallet?
Why are you broke all the time?
How do I look?
