PERSONIFICATION is when inanimate objects, or ideas are given qualities as if they were alive. It could also be when animals are given human qualities.
The pencil flew out of my hand.
In this example, the writer is using figurative language to show that it felt like the pencil sprung from her hand. The pencil is not actually flying.
The wind howled through the trees.
The car died of exhaustion.
PATHETIC FALLACY is a form of Personification. PATHETIC FALLACY occurs when the weather is personified in such a way that it dictates the events in the story.
For instance, the weather is usually stormy in a mystery novel or a horror story.
“The clouds screamed and the lightning pierced the sky“, might be stated when the killer is lurking in the shadows.

The weather in sunny and bright in an uplifting or happy moment in the story.
“The sun sang down on us“, might be stated in a part of the story when the two lovers meet.
